Chapter 8
Gwendolyn was left behind, following us, trying to find a chance to talk to me alone.
But I went straight back into the office after finishing lunch. She couldn't follow.
Later, she would wait at the entrance every day to give me flowers and ask for reconciliation:
"I know you hate Rowan. I've already distanced myself from him."
"Felix, let's get back together!"
She brought me homemade breakfast every day, never repeating a dish, but I never accepted any of it.
In the past, when I was good to her, she enjoyed my kindness while still entangling with Rowan.
Now that I had left her, she finally knew regret.
Too late!
The weather was too cold and I caught a slight cold without realizing it. I passed by a hospital room on my way to get medicine.
Gwendolyn was carefully tending to Rowan, who was lying in bed. Her tone was gentle:
"Rowan, I just made this porridge. It's a bit hot, let me blow on it for you."
"What else do you want to eat? I'll make it for you."
As she spoke, she suddenly caught sight of me from the corner of her eye. Shocked, she put down the bowl and rushed over to grab me, explaining non-stop:
"I really have distanced myself from him, but he caught a cold after being on the roof the other day, and he was scared, so he fell ill."
"I didn't want to take care of him either, but you know he has relatives at your company."
"I was afraid he might retaliate. I'm only looking after him for your sake."
Again, for my sake.
Her excuses were always the same few, used over and over. Wasn't she tired of it?
Moreover, on the day Rowan tried to jump, I saw his aunt who worked as a cleaning supervisor.
How was he going to retaliate?
Have his aunt unplug my internet cable?
I pulled her hand off me and stepped back to maintain distance:
"Gwendolyn, I'll say this one last time. We've broken up. We have no relationship whatsoever."
"Who you want to take care of or be close to has nothing to do with me."
Gwendolyn was stunned, her eyes reddening.
She suddenly noticed the slip of paper in my hand and anxiously asked:
"Are you sick? What's wrong?"
"Let me get the medicine for you. You should rest."
Gwendolyn reached out to grab my prescription. I was about to refuse when Rowan suddenly shouted from the hospital room:
"Gwendolyn! My head hurts so much. I think I'm dying. Quick, call a doctor for me!"
There was clearly a call button at every hospital bed, and nurses were coming and going all around. But Gwendolyn still panicked, pushing me aside and rushing in to comfort Rowan.
She hugged Rowan, softly reassuring him.
In the corner where she couldn't In the corner where she couldn't see, Rowan's gaze towards me was full of provocation, with the attitude of a victor.
How childish.
I shook my head and took my prescription to the window to get my medicine.
By the time Gwendolyn remembered me, I had already left. She searched the whole hospital for me.
