Chapter 5
The contempt in Gwendolyn and Rowan's eyes instantly turned to shock.
The once crowded and noisy office became so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
After what seemed like an eternity, a faint sound came from the crowd as someone let out a shocked expletive, completely shattering the eerie atmosphere.
Gwendolyn straightened her posture and looked me up and down:
"Felix, have you lost your mind?"
Hearing this, Rowan breathed a sigh of relief and laughed:
"This joke isn't funny."
Joke?
I coldly looked at Gwendolyn:
"Whether it's a joke or not, you can see for yourself by looking at the contract."
Gwendolyn immediately put on a stern face. She and Rowan huddled together to look at the contract, their expressions growing increasingly grim.
When she realized I had truly become a director at the client company, she looked at me in disbelief:
"Terminating the contract, is this your revenge?"
She was thinking too much. I didn't have time for that:
"The quality your company submitted is seriously inconsistent with what we initially discussed, and it has also affected our reputation."
"Not only is the contract terminated, but here is the compensation you need to pay."
With that, I pulled out another document from my briefcase.
When Gwendolyn saw the string of numbers, her eyes widened in shock:
"You're robbing us!"
I shrugged:
"If you disagree, you can file a lawsuit. Thunder Tech's legal department will be happy to see you in court."
"Goodbye."
I turned and left, leaving a group of people staring at each other in bewilderment.
As soon as I walked out of the company doors, I heard Gwendolyn yelling at the receptionist:
"Why didn't you tell me earlier? This whole situation is your fault. You're fired!"
Still the same as before, always taking her anger out on others.
The real culprits behind this mess were her as the leader who shielded Rowan, and Rowan himself who managed everything without any real ability. Yet she only lashed out at the innocent receptionist.
I had just reached the elevator when Jack caught up with me, hanging his head as he apologized:
"Boss, please take me with you. I know I was wrong."
"That bastard just has me buy coffee and do odd jobs. He doesn't let me do any real work."
Jack had started working under me right out of college. For three years, I had taught him everything I knew, practically spoon-feeding him knowledge.
Yet he had stepped on me when I was down, and now he wanted to crawl back shamelessly.
Did he think it would be that easy?
I looked at him coldly:
"What are you talking about, Jack? I'm just someone who plays favorites. I can't give you opportunities for advancement."
"You should learn the art of bootlicking from Rowan."
Jack's face turned completely pale.
As I was about to enter the elevator, I saw Gwendolyn rushing over.
I quickly pressed the elevator button. She stomped her foot in frustration, angrily shouting:
"It's just one project! So what if we lost it? I'll show you even more projects!"
"I don't believe the company can't survive without you!"
I didn't respond.
With the foundation I had built, even without me, the company could continue operating normally and wouldn't go bankrupt.
But if Rowan remained in charge, that was another story.
I returned to my company and worked diligently, leading my team to develop a brand new system. This major achievement earned me a celebratory dinner hosted by the CEO himself.
The CEO specifically reserved a large private room and invited our entire tech department.
Everyone walked in arm in arm, faces full of smiles.
I was about to enter amid the crowd when I saw Gwendolyn appear at the door, sweating profusely and looking disheveled. One of her high heels had even broken.
"Did you change your phone number?" she asked, her tone no longer aggressive, just a hint of complaint.
It seemed she had been anxious during these days of not being able to contact me.
I don't know how she heard about my celebration dinner, but she had rushed over.
I walked past her to go inside.
She anxiously tried to follow.
I stopped in my tracks and looked at her coldly:
"This is our company dinner. Outsiders, please leave."
