Chapter 7
When I got home that night, I saw Gwendolyn had sent several friend requests, repeatedly asking why I wasn't accepting. I didn't reply to any of them.
After a good night's sleep, on my way to work the next day, Gwendolyn blocked my path with dark circles under her eyes:
"Felix! Do you really not care if I live or die? I truly have no other options!"
I walked around her in exasperation:
"Don't you have that overseas-educated talent? Let him figure it out."
Gwendolyn had a "I knew you were still angry" look on her face. She smiled and promised:
"I know you're still mad at him. I've already fired him. The director position will always be yours from now on."
People laugh when they're speechless to the extreme.
I was a director at a big company, valued by the CEO, with a high salary. Why would I go be a workhorse at her nearly bankrupt company?
I shook my head and was about to leave when suddenly someone across the street screamed. A crowd gathered.
Rowan was standing on the roof of the building opposite, calling Gwendolyn:
"Gwendolyn, I was too arrogant, too useless."
"I failed your trust and caused the company to face bankruptcy!"
"How is firing me enough? I can't repay you, so I can only repay with my life!"
Hearing this, Gwendolyn cried anxiously:
"Rowan, calm down. I only fired you temporarily. When the company gets better, you can come back, okay?"
Rowan's tone was resolute: "I don't want to drag you down..."
Gwendolyn's face turned pale with anxiety. She gritted her teeth:
"Rowan, come down. The director position is still yours..."
I didn't stay to watch the drama. I had left as soon as Gwendolyn answered the phone, so I didn't know what else they said.
This incident alarmed the firefighters, and everyone in the vicinity found out about it.
Even colleagues at my company were discussing it:
"You know that guy who tried to jump?"
"He was just threatening the company. He didn't actually dare to jump."
"He wet himself when the firefighters pulled him back."
A group of people laughed and mocked as they busied themselves with work. The morning passed quickly.
I went downstairs for lunch with my colleagues. Gwendolyn ran over with freshly bought coffee:
"I'm sorry about earlier, Felix. It was a special situation."
"But don't worry. I promised him the director position, but I didn't say which department."
She winked at me playfully:
"I opened a brand new department and gave him an empty title to play with."
"The technical director position belongs only to you."
I treated her like air, pulling my colleague past her:
"Let's go get some chicken stew."
