Chapter 7

Yvette was stunned by his outburst. When she finally recovered, she pouted petulantly.

"I didn't know! Why are you yelling at me, Uncle?"

She crossed her arms defensively. "I don't believe Olivia would go that far. She's probably just faking it to manipulate you, to get your sympathy. How manipulative."

"Uncle, I know women like her all too well. She's probably just jealous of all the gifts you've given me. She's trying to scare you on purpose. Doesn't she realize that marrying you was more than she deserves in eight lifetimes? How dare she ask for more? She should know her place..."

Her words hit a nerve. Gabriel's gaze fell to the pink diamond necklace around Yvette's neck, and his mind flashed back to that night at the main house.

Olivia hadn't worn any jewelry, dressed in a simple T-shirt and jeans, enduring the mocking stares as she stood among the expensive gowns Gabriel had bought for Yvette.

And what had Gabriel been doing?

He had been busy on the balcony with Yvette...

A sharp pang of guilt stabbed at Gabriel's heart. He had never given Olivia anything. Why was everyone so cruel to her? Even Yvette, whom he had always thought of as an innocent, kind-hearted girl to protect, was mocking her now.

He realized the truth in an instant.

Gabriel's voice grew cold as he turned to Yvette. "Olivia and I have been married for years. I know her better than anyone. She's nothing like you. She would never take my money, let alone resort to petty tricks."

"Yvette, you call Olivia 'Aunt' to her face, but behind her back, you say things like this. You're the real two-faced one."

"I've done everything I can for you. From now on, we're just uncle and niece."

His words hit like a slap, but Gabriel wasn't finished. "I'm going to find Olivia now. You should go home. Don't let me hear you speak like that again. And don't forget whose heart is beating in your chest."

Without waiting for a response, Gabriel turned and stormed out.

Yvette tried her usual trick, clutching her chest and pretending to feel faint, but Gabriel didn't look back.

He ran home like a man possessed. Of all the things Yvette had said, Gabriel desperately clung to one hope: that Olivia was just playing a prank on him. He imagined she would be waiting for him when he got home, ready to laugh at how worried he'd been.

But when he got there, his hope crumbled.

Olivia's things were gone. All that was left were signed divorce papers, and the donation certificate he had hidden in his safe. The document that marked the beginning of the deception that had dragged her into hell.

There was also a USB drive.

Gabriel plugged it into his computer, trembling. The first video was of his conversation with Zack that night.

The second was a video of him and Yvette on the balcony.

His heart sank as he watched. The weight of his mistakes hit him like a ton of bricks.

Desperate, he called Zack.

"Zack... help me. Check if Olivia had surgery at any hospital today."

Zack's voice was confused. "What surgery? Didn't you replace her artificial heart today?"

Gabriel ran a hand through his hair, panic setting in. "Olivia never showed up. She found out about everything. She had someone remove the heart and send it to me... Zack, I'm really scared. Please, help me find out what happened."

Zack was silent for a long time before finally sighing. "Gabriel, the last time you told me you were scared was when Yvette was diagnosed with heart disease. Why is it Olivia now? You should be relieved she left you like this, without revenge. What are you afraid of?"

Zack's voice softened. "Admit it, Gabriel. You've fallen for her. I told you before, Yvette isn't as innocent as you think. If she were, she wouldn't have stolen someone else's fiancé. She wouldn't have waited half a day before pushing you to give her Olivia's heart. And you, you let her lead you around like a puppet."

"I'll help you search, but you should prepare yourself. If I were Olivia and knew everything, I wouldn't want to see you again, dead or alive."

The phone clicked in Gabriel's ear, and he was left in the deafening silence of his empty room.

He stared at the divorce papers in his hand, his heart hollow.

Then, slowly, he covered his face with his hands and broke down, sobbing.
