Chapter 6
After successfully winning the pink diamond necklace for Yvette, Gabriel treated her to a candlelit dinner, all while keeping an eye on the clock. They rushed to the hospital together after the meal, but when they arrived, they were told Olivia hadn't shown up yet.
Gabriel glanced at the time, 00:00.
Why hadn't Olivia arrived?
Just as he was about to call her, his assistant came running toward him with a small box in hand.
"Mr. Grant, your wife wasn't home. This was just delivered. It's a gift from her to you."
Gabriel smiled faintly, a little amused. "So Olivia went to prepare a gift for me? She always loves these little surprises."
He imagined Olivia was probably hiding just around the corner, secretly recording his reaction on her phone like she'd done so many times before. He could almost picture her cute, sneaky expression as she peeked out, watching him. It melted his heart.
He realized then he'd been too harsh on her that day. And now, he was so late. Yet, she wasn't even angry.
Gabriel gestured for his assistant to open the box. No matter what was inside, he was determined to act thrilled, he couldn't let Olivia down.
The box opened, and the moment Gabriel saw the contents, his smile faltered. His face drained of color.
There were no flowers, no watch or tie, nothing he'd expect as a gift. Instead, there was a fist-sized chunk of silver metal, oddly shaped like a machine joint.
But Gabriel knew exactly what it was. His hands trembled as he cradled it gently. It was the artificial heart he had personally placed inside Olivia's chest all those years ago.
Out of habit, he had even engraved a tiny "G" on it.
This was the artificial heart that should still be inside Olivia.
A small note slipped out from the crevice of the metal.
Gabriel hastily picked it up. His eyes scanned the familiar handwriting.
"Gabriel, you're no longer in my heart."
His mind went blank.
No. This wasn't possible. His eyes frantically searched the note again. This was Olivia's artificial heart. But why was it removed?
Where was Olivia now?
She was too weak to work, let alone afford the astronomical cost of a heart replacement. If she hadn't replaced it, then... Olivia was,
He couldn't finish the thought. The mere possibility took his breath away.
Even his assistant could sense something was terribly wrong, though Yvette remained clueless. She stared at the object in Gabriel's hands, disgust evident on her face.
"Olivia really has some nerve, huh? Giving you this junk as a gift?" she scoffed. "She's been married to you all these years. I'm sure she's pocketed a fortune. And she can't even give you a decent gift? Once a pauper, always a pauper. She probably wants to keep all the money for herself."
"We rushed here in the middle of the night for her surgery, and she doesn't even show up. You've really spoiled her rotten, Uncle. Let her suffer for all I care. Who wants this piece of junk anyway?"
Yvette swatted the object out of Gabriel's hands, trying to drag him away.
But Gabriel, usually so gentle with her, snapped. He shoved her aside with unexpected force, his voice booming. "Shut up! Do you even know what that is? It's Olivia's artificial heart. Without it, she'll die!"
He scrambled to pick it up, his hands shaking, his entire body flooded with dread.
