Chapter 8

I saw Troy again three days later, at a business gathering. He had come to Chicago upon a friend's recommendation, personally seeking the Hoffman Group's assistance to save his company. As I approached the door, I overheard voices from within, "Mr. Angelo, don't worry. Miss Hoffman may be young, but they are extraordinarily capable and have long been at the helm of the Hoffman Group."

"If they agree to lend a hand and support your business, your company will undoubtedly recover! It's just a matter of whether Miss Hoffman is willing to help."

I pushed the door open and all eyes turned toward me. Mr. Anderson, the head of one of my subsidiaries, immediately greeted me with a smile, "Miss Hoffman, you're here!"He gestured subtly toward Troy, signaling him to come over and propose a toast. Carrying his wine glass cautiously, Troy walked up.When he raised his eyes and saw me, his entire body froze, "... Felicia?" His eyes reddened instantly, "Felicia, how... how are you here? I've been looking for you everywhere!"Seeing this, Mr. Anderson's smile widened as he looked back and forth between Troy and me. He said, "I didn't expect Mr. Angelo and Mr. He to be old acquaintances..."

He turned to Troy, "You've known someone as influential as Miss Hoffman all along? Why didn't you tell me earlier?"Troy was stunned, "Miss Hoffman?" He looked at me in disbelief.

"You... You're the head of the Hoffman Group?"

Ignoring him, I turned to Mr. Anderson with a faint smile, "So the person you wanted me to meet today was Troy Angelo?"

Earlier in the day, I had received an invitation from Mr. Anderson. Someone had sought his help in arranging a meeting with me.Since Mr. Anderson had been with the subsidiary for years, I decided to honor his request. Little did I know that person would turn out to be Troy.Noticing the strange tension between us, Mr. Anderson looked puzzled, "Miss Hoffman, are you and Mr. Angelo old acquaintances? You don't seem... too close."

I glanced at Troy, smiled lightly and replied, "You could say we're old acquaintances. I'm the ex-wife Troy divorced to marry his young, pretty secretary."The moment I finished speaking, Mr. Anderson's face fell. He knew that since returning from Houston, I had thrown myself into revitalizing the Hoffman Group, determined to never be taken advantage of by a man again.I had been actively empowering women within the company, ensuring policies leaned toward protecting women's rights.

Understanding this history, he immediately grasped what kind of storm was brewing between Troy and me.Mr. Anderson wasted no time in declaring his stance. He glared at Troy, furious, "To think you're that kind of person! After achieving wealth and success, you abandoned the wife who stood by you through thick and thin. I truly misjudged you. I don't associate with people like you!"

"Get out! I won't help you today!" Angrily, Mr. Anderson turned to me, offering my coat as he prepared to escort me out.Behind us, Troy fell to his knees, his eyes red and brimming with desperation, "Felicia, don't go! I know I made an unforgivable mistake. I've been searching for you these past few months. I regret everything, can you forgive me?"

He kept saying, "You once told me I was your family and no matter what mistakes I made, you'd give me another chance..."

My steps paused, but I didn't look back.At that moment, Louise barged into the room uninvited. She wore an opulent evening gown, exuding arrogance as she addressed everyone, "Good evening, everyone. I am Mrs. Angelo..."Her words trailed off as she froze, her gaze landing on the scene before her. The smile on her face vanished as her eyes fell upon Troy kneeling on the floor. She frowned and called out, "Babe, why are you on your knees? Aren't you here to discuss business? Mr. Anderson, how could you humiliate Troy like this..."Her voice caught when her eyes met mine and her face turned ashen, "Felicia! It's you!"I turned slowly, a faint smile playing on my lips, "So Mrs. Angelo is here. I believe you've received my wedding gift?"
