Chapter 7
"Did you arrange for all those people?"
Troy's face was dark and grim as he stared at the flood of entertainment news reports on the screen. He clenched his fists tightly, glaring at Louise with gritted teeth. The secretary, oblivious to the magnitude of her mistake, basked in the pride of her 'achievement.'
"So what if I did? Troy, didn't you say you loved me? That you didn't care about that old hag, Felicia, anymore!"
"If it weren't for the child she was carrying, you would've divorced her long ago. Now that she doesn't even have a child and I'm the one pregnant with your baby..."
"In the hospital, you even got down on one knee and proposed to me. What's there to hide? Why shouldn't I let the reporters cover it?"
Her smugness hadn't fully played out when Troy slapped her across the face.
"You idiot!"
Troy was furious, "If Felicia were here, she'd never have done something so stupid!"Louise, too caught up in her own joy, failed to consider Troy's perspective. She had no idea how this news would damage his reputation and provoke criticism from the outside world.Sure enough, his assistant, face pale, handed him the phone, "Mr. Angelo, you were right. The company's public image and stock prices have plummeted because of this incident!"Louise, clutching her face, suddenly panicked, "How... how could this happen?" Frightened, she tried to hug Troy for comfort.
"Don't touch me!"
He pushed her away forcefully.
"Besides your looks, can't you use your brain for once?"
"Felicia was my wife for six years. She worked alongside me to build this company. And now that it's grown, I divorced her to marry a young, pretty secretary? You leaked this news without consulting me. How do you think the public sees me now? How will my business partners trust me?"
Louise was stunned. She had considered these possibilities but deemed them trivial compared to the glamour of becoming Mrs. Angelo.
"I... Troy, I didn't mean to..." she stammered, tears welling up.
"Stop calling my name!"
Troy's face turned completely cold, his eyes filled with disdain.
"Felicia was right. You're nothing but a shallow, manipulative woman who uses her looks to seduce men. Good for a fling, but a disaster as a wife!"
The joy in Louise's heart was doused like a flame in water. In their secret three-year affair, Troy had never spoken to her so harshly. When her legs hurt, he would kneel in his office to massage her feet. If the pipes at her place broke, a single coquettish plea would make him drop everything to fix them.Though a secretary, she had privileges no one else did, even calling him 'Babe' instead of 'Mr. Angelo.' He always answered gently.
After finally 'winning' the battle and becoming his bride-to-be, how could everything change so drastically? Could the old saying be true? That the unattainable always stirs longing and once attained, becomes unwanted?Yet she forced herself to smile, "No matter what, I'll soon be Mrs. Angelo. Even if Troy is angry now, so what? The media has already acknowledged me. Everyone knows I'm his future wife now.
As for Felicia, she's nothing but a memory of the past!"In his office, Troy rubbed his temples, overwhelmed with frustration. Not only was there no news from the team he sent to Chicago, but Louise had stirred up fresh trouble. His gesture at the hospital was meant to placate her, using a ring I had discarded. But Louise, cunning as ever, had prearranged for paparazzi to secretly film everything. Now, it was all over the internet. No explanation could clear the air.
The video showed them in an intimate scene, leaving no room for doubt. As he stared at my photo on his desk, Troy's eyes reddened, "Felicia, it's only after you left me that I realized how good you truly are. I regret not listening to you, not severing ties with Louise sooner. Now that she's pregnant with my child, I have to take responsibility. Will you ever forgive me?"Days later, chaos erupted in Troy's company.
"What's going on?" he asked.
His employees and assistant were panicking, "Mr. Angelo, we don't know why, but our clients suddenly decided to cancel their contracts!"
"If we can't deliver, we'll have to pay tens of millions in breach fees!"
"Mr. Angelo, Hillstone Corporation also abruptly pulled out of negotiations. They're refusing to take our goods at all!"
In an instant, Troy's company plunged into a crisis. Overnight, his hair turned white with worry.
