Chapter 5

It just so happened that the nurse found Zayn and told him that the pregnant woman in bed 36 had miscarried, asking him to accompany her immediately. His voice came through the phone, cold and biting:

"Marie, you really know how to play the game, huh? You think the kid's gonna make me feel guilty again? Didn't you say you wanted to see sharks, but were too scared to dive alone while pregnant, so you dragged Michelle with you? You used her because she's nice, but don't think I'll fall for your tricks again."

With that, he hung up. In his eyes, Michelle was innocent, and I was just manipulative. But honestly, it didn't matter anymore. Getting out of this marriage was the best thing I could do for myself.

I applied for an appraisal of the knife wound on my right arm and headed back to the diving team to pull the radio audio from the day of the incident. The walls were covered with posters celebrating Zayn's successful rescue, and a group of fans were crowded around, snapping pictures of Zayn and Michelle.

"Marie, what are you doing back here? If it weren't for Captain Zayn's rescue, our diving team would've been finished!" The team members who didn't know the truth glared at me with disgust.

Michelle, hearing the noise, pushed through the crowd and walked up to me, tears in her eyes. "Marie, how are you and the baby doing? If you're upset, take it out on me, but don't hurt Zayn's child. The baby's innocent."

Zayn stormed over, furious. "Marie, what are you doing here? You've just had an accident, and the baby's only four months old! Why don't you stay in the hospital and protect the fetus?"

He grabbed my arm roughly, pulling me toward the exit. "Is this the only skill you have as a diving coach? You're letting personal grudges ruin everything. Get out of here!"

And then, one of Zayn's fans threw a rotten egg at me, hitting me square in the face. My nose bled, mixing with the rotten egg's slimy mess, and I felt the humiliation burn through me.

"Ugh!" Michelle couldn't hide her disgust.

Zayn stepped back, glaring at me. "Marie, apologize to Michelle and everyone right now!"

"I'm not apologizing to trash," I said, voice steady, refusing to back down.

Michelle, tears streaming down her face, took a step forward. "I'm sorry, I should've taken better care of the pregnant woman. I can be blunt, and I don't like to play games. When Marie said she wanted to see sharks, I thought it was too dangerous for her to go alone, so I went with her. What happened wasn't what Marie intended, and she paid the price. Please, forgive both of us."

Michelle's tearful apology seemed to win over the crowd. Many softened, but there were still some who gathered, eager to tear into me.

Finally, a diver who couldn't stand it anymore shouted for everyone to stop.
